Lt. Pihlgard served with Company E, 61st Infantry, Fifth Division. He entered the First Officers' Training Camp at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, where he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant. After being promoted to 1st Lieutenant, he sailed for Luxembourg with the 61st Infantry. Lt. Pihlgard was severely wounded on October 13, 1918, in the Meuse-Argonne offensive. After treatment in a hospital for 3 months he returned to his outfit. Lt. Pihlgard died at Luxembourg from influenza. His funeral was held in Chicago at the American Legion headquarters, November 21, (year uncertain).-taken from Web site above and University of Illinois records
