Lt. Slonneger was killed instantly in a flight maneuvers crash at 10,000 feet near Atlanta, Georgia. In Europe during World War II, he flew with the 109th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 9th Air Force. He was a P-51 pilot, veteran of 54 missions over Germany. He had decided to remain in service and had applied for additional overseas duty. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with five clusters.-taken from Illinois Alumni News, June, 1946
